HOLIDAY WORKSHOP: Winter Scent Intro to Perfumery
Join aromatic perfumer and essential oil distiller Jessica Ring as she opens a door into the secret garden of botanical perfume. This is an ancient art form in which the aromatics explored are placed within the sacred context of herbal medicine. Essential oils are approached as entities of the ecosystem, with a spirit and story, as opposed to static creations made from synthetic materials. In this class students will explore a wide range of locally extracted aromatics while Jessica blends a botanical perfume. The creation process will be explored first-hand as students test and smell the perfume as it develops. Individual ingredients and their attributes will slowly fuse into a whole fragrance which will be described in terms of radiance, tenacity, sillage, dry-down, aromatic evolution, and medicinal effects/applications. Harvest stories and extraction details will accompany some of the ingredients, particularly those that have been extracted by the perfumer. The style of perfume that is blended will depend on the group of students that attend; whatever we make will be medicine for our collective happiness, and will hold components of our forests, fields, deserts, and farms.
